- Depreotide Imaging
Predicts Breast CA Response to Hormonal Therapy
- Researchers reported in the
January Journal of Nuclear Medicine an innovative use of
somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS). Tc-99m
Depreotide (NeoTect) imaging accurately predicted which
women would respond to hormonal
therapy. The current method that examines a sample of
breast tissue for estrogen receptors has a low accuracy rate
as opposed to the 100% accuracy of SRS imaging found in
this study.

- U.S. Market for
Diagnostic Radiopharmaceuticals
- Bio-Tech Systems has
published a comprehensive report of diagnostic
radiopharmaceutical markets. U.S. sales of diagnostic
radiopharmaceuticals reached $1.53 billion in 2004 and are
expected to rise to $3.20 billion by 2010.
Radiopharmaceutical sales grew 14.3% in 2004 and should
continue growth in the range of 13%-16% through 2008. This
growth will be based on introduction of new products, strong
demand for cardiology procedures and increased sales of
oncology products, particularly FDG for PET imaging.
Nuclear cardiology sales of $1.06 billion in 2004 will
increase to $1.89 billion by 2010.

Uranium Quick Facts:
Uranium
was first discovered in 1798 by analyzing
pitchblende samples of silver mines and named after
the planet Uranus. Becquerel discovered its
radioactive property in 1896 and it wasn't until
1938 that it was discovered that U could be split to
release energy. One ton of natural uranium can
produce 40 million hours of electricity, equivalent
to burning 16,000 tons of coal or 80,000 barrels of
oil. U is about 1.6 times more dense than
lead. Depleted uranium is used for radiation
shielding material. A gallon of milk weighs
about 8 lbs, while a gallon container of U would
weigh 150 lbs! |
