Current Practices in Renal Imaging

Program Description
Nuclear medicine renal imaging provides an assessment of a patient's urinary
function. This program will allow nuclear medicine professionals to
understand how renal imaging and the radiopharmaceuticals are used in the
diagnosis of kidney disease.
This is a knowledge based activity for pharmacists. Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the kidney as it relates to
renal imaging.
2. Explain radiopharmaceutical pharmacokinetics as they relate to renal anatomy
and physiology to provide a basis for radiopharmaceutical choice in specific
disease states.
3. Explain the basic renogram and summarize quantitative parameters in scan
interpretation.
4. Describe diuresis renography and suggest steps that can be taken to minimize
non-diagnostic or false positive studies.
5. Describe the features of ACE inhibition renography with a focus on the
physiological basis of the test, the difference between renal artery stenosis
and renovascular hypertension, diagnostic criteria, the implications of a
positive test.
